Cley next the Sea (to give it its proper name) is a village and one time port on the east bank of the River Glaven close to its mouth. Its population is around 420, less in winter and more in summer. It sits on the main A149 coast road roughly halfway between Wells next the Sea and Cromer and is located within the North Norfolk Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Cley next the Sea St margaret is an Ancient Parish in the Holt deanery of the Diocese of Norwich. During the Middle Ages it was "one of the principal ports of East Anglia, exporting large quantities of wool and grain. The River Glaven was navigable to large ships as far as Glandford and ran into the sea a half mile north west of Cley."
